Flooding in South Carolina due to heavy rainfall has resulted in the deaths of nine people, rescues of hundreds trapped by the flooding, and the closure of over 500 roads and bridges. Five people drowned in flooded vehicles and four others died due to weather-related car accidents.
More than 20 inches of rain fell in parts of South Carolina between Friday and Sunday and continued throughout Monday. At least nine dams broke, bridges flooded, and sections of road collapsed due to the heavy rain.
The flooding has also resulted in closed schools and government offices. About 40,000 people have been left without water to drink causing water distribution centers to open. About 26,000 were left without power according to officials.
