Gunmen killed 18 and took more hostage after detonating a car bomb and launching a suicide attack at the entrance of an eastern Baghdad mall. ISIS claimed responsibility in a statement online for the Monday attack at Jawhara Mall.
The attack was described as a hostage situation; it was suspected that 50 people were trapped inside the mall. The attack, which lasted over an hour, ended with Iraqi forces surrounding the building and getting troops onto the roof. Two of the attackers were killed while four were arrested and at least four police officers were killed.
In the aftermath of the attack, several major roads, malls, and bridges were closed in fear of other attacks. The highly fortified Green Zone was also closed as it is home to several foreign embassies and most of the country’s political elite.
